One less thing that can go wrong

Nobody buys race fuel for two per cent more power. They buy it so that when the car is slow on Sunday, they can find out why.

Power is the claim nobody can check

Every fuel company quotes horsepower. The numbers are usually true and almost always useless to you, because they were measured on someone else’s engine, at a different compression ratio, in different air.

The question that decides a weekend isn’t how much a fuel makes. It’s how much it varies.

A baseline beats a peak number

A race car or a race bike is a stack of variables, and a race weekend is the job of working out which one is wrong. Every input you can fix in place is one you no longer have to test.

If the fuel is identical from drum to drum, a slow car is a setup problem, and setup problems get solved on a Saturday afternoon. If the fuel moves underneath you, nothing you learned on Friday is worth anything by Sunday, and you can spend a season chasing a fault that isn’t in the machine.

That’s why the figure that matters most after blending isn’t the peak octane. It’s how little the fuel changes from one batch to the next.

It matters most to the smallest teams

A factory team has the engineers and the data to isolate a variable. It can run back-to-back, log everything and find the fault. A two-person privateer outfit can’t. For them, an unexplained loss on Sunday morning isn’t a data problem; it’s the whole weekend.

Taking one input off the table is worth more to the back of the grid than to the front, which is the opposite of how motorsport usually works.

What that means when you order

  • Buy enough of one batch for the event, or the season, rather than topping up from different sources.
  • Keep drums sealed until you need them, out of direct sun and heat.
  • Write the blend name and date on every jug you decant into.
  • Check your class rules before you change fuel: some series nominate one.
