Rally is the most European of motorsports, and the fuel question comes before anything else: is what’s in the tank legal for the car you’ve entered? VP blends two unleaded 102 RON fuels to FIA specifications, RX102.2 and R5.1, and we sell both in 19, 53 and 204 litre packs.

Two fuels, one rulebook
RX102.2 is VP’s all-round FIA 102: unleaded, colourless and lightly oxygenated, for circuit and rally. It is also FIM-approved, so the same fuel works for cars and motorcycles, which very little else on the shelf can say.
R5.1 has the same 102 RON at a deliberately lower MON and slightly higher oxygen content. VP developed it with M-Sport for the Fiesta R5, so it is a fuel built around a Rally2/R5 engine rather than adapted to one.

Rally2 is the fleet that matters
R5.1 takes its name from a class, not a marketing number. Rally2 (R5 under the FIA’s earlier naming) sits directly below the World Rally Championship’s Rally1 cars: a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder regulated to around 285 hp, permanent four-wheel drive, a five-speed sequential gearbox and a 1,230 kg minimum weight.
It runs in WRC2, in the FIA’s regional championships and in national rallies all over Europe. It’s the car most rally crews actually enter, and the one R5.1 was developed for.
Scrutineering first, stage times second
A fuel specification is paperwork, not a performance claim, and on a rally paperwork can decide more than stage times do. Both blends are made to the FIA’s published fuel requirements, so a crew can check them against the rulebook before the car reaches the service park. VP blends to the specification; what your championship accepts is set by its own regulations.
Classes inside one event don’t always run the same fuel rules, and some series nominate a fuel. Check your sporting and technical regulations before you order.
The same drum in March and in September
A rally crosses more weather in a weekend than a circuit sees in a season: a service park in Finland in autumn, a Spanish stage in spring. What a crew needs is a fuel that behaves the same in both. That’s the case for a fuel blended to a published specification rather than to a number on a dyno sheet. Once the drum is right, fuel stops being something anyone in the team has to think about.
