Nobody wants an octane booster for its own sake. They have an engine that has started to ping on fuel it used to run fine on, or a build that needs more octane than any pump carries. Those are two different problems, and VP makes different products for them.
Restore: Octane Booster Unleaded
The entry point, in a 473 ml bottle, for road-going petrol engines that need their octane put back rather than raised past standard. VP rates it at up to 5 numbers (50 points) of octane gain, and it’s designed to work with oxygen sensors and catalytic converters. It also cleans injectors and helps prevent gum and varnish.
A bigger restore: Octanium Unleaded
The same idea with more behind it, in a 946 ml bottle: up to 7 numbers (70 points), still safe for oxygen sensors and catalysts. Vehicles with emission controls have a lower maximum dose than those without, so follow the dosing on the bottle.
Unleash: Octanium
VP’s strongest booster, for off-road and competition vehicles rather than daily drivers. VP rates it at up to 8 numbers (80 points), enough to work as a lead substitute in two- and four-stroke petrol engines without catalytic converters. On an engine with oxygen sensors or a catalyst it can still be used, but only at a reduced dose, which VP puts at about 4.5 numbers.
| Octane Booster Unleaded | Octanium Unleaded | Octanium | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bottle | 473 ml | 946 ml | 946 ml |
| Octane gain | up to 5 numbers | up to 7 numbers | up to 8 numbers |
| With O2 sensors & catalysts | Yes | Yes, at the reduced emission-control dose | Only at a reduced dose (about 4.5 numbers) |
| Built for | Road engines that have lost octane | Road engines that need a bigger restore | Off-road and competition engines |
As published by VP Racing Fuels. One number = 10 points: 95 to 100 octane is 5 numbers.
Storage and handling
All three are light-sensitive: keep them out of light and away from frost. They can discolour light-coloured plastic tanks and containers, so wipe up spills straight away. Unopened, VP gives them a shelf life of up to five years.
When a booster isn’t the answer
If you’re adding the maximum dose to every tank, you’re asking an additive to do a race fuel’s job. A blended fuel such as T4+ (98.5 (R+M)/2) or an FIA 102 like RX102.2 gives you the octane without the dosing, and comes with a published specification your scrutineer can check.
